| RAMS REGIONAL ATMOSPHERIC MODELING SYSTEM |
The atmospheric model RAMS - Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (version 3b), developed during the last 20 years at CSU - Colorado State University (USA), Department of Atmospheric Sciences, and managed by the Mission Research Corporation, *Aster Division, Fort Collins, Colorado (USA).
|
Model RAMS, able to accurately reconstruct the atmospheric circulation and structure in a very wide range of scales (thousands of km to the microscale), solves the fundamental dynamical and thermodynamical equations of the atmosphere without the hydrostatical approximations. In the recent years much effort was devoted to the improvement of the data assimilation schemes (with the introduction of DATA assimilation in time), to the refinement of the cloud microphysics schemes and of the representation of the surface-atmosphere exchanges (in particular the land surface). One of the most
relevant results is the increased accuracy of the quantitative precipitation
forecasts at both point and area level and in time, which has led to the
operational coupling of flood and hydrological forecasts model with RAMS.
The Meteorology and Climatology subsystem of LaMMA, in cooperation with the Remote Sensing subsystem of LaMMA and the Mission Research Corporation, *Aster Division, made RAMS operational after more than two years of application, in particular:
|
| RAMS
produces daily the atmospheric forecasts over two nested areas, the first
at 40 km resolution
over Italy and a portion of central-western Mediterranean, the second at
8
km resolution around Tuscany.
The two areas are nest in a two-ways mode, thus the fields are always consistent and at equilibrium.

Model RAMS produces
forecasts at hourly frequency over the two areas till the lead time
of 72 hours. It is initialized every day hon the basis of the analysis
and forecast atmospheric fields produced by the 12 UTC run of the ECMWF
global
model.
A subset of the
atmospheric fields produced by RAMS are made available over the LaMMA WEB
site at six hour frequency.
